For human beings, our jing qi shen is the best in the morning.

And today please allow me to introduce the interviewee, Dean Si Dongmei, the fourth-generation successor of the intangible cultural heritage Si’s Bonesetting, an energetic specialist in bonesetting.

We are very honored to invite you to this interview.
As a graduate in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), I didn’t get the chance to have a bonesetting lesson when studying massage.
So even us, as medical students of Traditonal Chinese Medicine(TCM), still consider bonesetting as a very mystical lesson.
Here I have got a question, what are the differences and relationship between massage and bonesetting?
Dean Si:
In TCM, massage can dredge meridians; while bonesetting can unset the bones of physiological changes, like fractures or dislocation, rapidly and effectively.
Host:
After talking about the differences between massage and bonesetting, let’s move on to the detailed features of bonesetting.
Dean Si:
The medical science of our country has long historical standing, extensive knowledge and profound scholarship.
Si’s Bonesetting and the traditional bonesetting have their own merits.
I generalize Si’s Bonesetting from years’ of clinical practice.
It is a perfect integration between bonesetting handed down from my ancestors and the massage from TCM.
With this therapy, patients suffering from cervical-shoulder and lumbodorsal pain can recover immediately.
And these are the features of our Si’s Bonesetting.

I heard that Si’s Bonesetting has applied for the intangible cultural heritage.
One thing we knew but not very well is that the application process is very complex.
So could you tell us what difficulties or problems you had been faced with during the application process?
Dean Si:
The examination and approval process of the intangible cultural heritage in our country is very strict.
Firstly, it should have a long historical origin like more than one hundred years.
Secondly, it should have its own features.
The Si’s Bonesetting formulas are the very application which are authorized as the intangible cultural heritage. The formulas consist of the bonesetting formula, the bonesetting plaster handed down from my ancestors, and the pills that can be used to treat the chronic severe cervical-shoulder and lumbodorsal pain or rheumatism.
These are our fornulas.
During the application process, we broke down the technique procedure into steps which can be repeated precisely according to the application requirements of the intangible cultural heritage.
You know, the technique procedure handed down from my ancestors has no written records.
which means I had to conclude every little step based on years of my clinical practice.
We summarized the procedure steps systematically, and recorded them like an educational film.
Dean Si:
Then let ‘s talk about Si’s bonesetting secret formula,.
As we all know, the quality of the Chinese medicine is the foundation of TCM clinic. We have to make sure the Chinese medicine of our formula are genuine regional drug.
Which means the medicine needs to be processed and soaked repeatedly for many times before it becomes the final medical cream.
The drug stick and the honey cream also need to go through a very complex procedure before they can be used in clinical treatment.
What we do is to collect every single step as required, and to prove the clinical efficacy of our formulas, and then we wait for the agency’s authorization.

We can see that the process of applying for intangible cultural heritage is very difficult.
I remember that there have been a series of reports of Dean Si on The People's Daily, sohu, and some other websites in about February, 2016.
Among all the reporting, I was impressed by a word you said, which was that you were willing to provide your skills to anyone who was interested in them.
Well, I was curious about this, why, why would you do this? Cause I know that the skills are ancestral, mysterious and priceless.
Dean Si:
That's the old saying, Ancestral things are not extraneous.
There is also a saying goes， the apprentice get the secret, the master starve to death.
Our skills of treating disease had no access to public before, because people who were venal and eager for instant benefits would use this to make money and to deceive patients，and also those who didn’t learn the skill well would make therapeutic errors which would definitely damage our reputation.
That’s why we didn’t pass on our skills to others who are not blood relationships.
At present, our country has placed an unprecedented emphasis on the development of traditional Chinese medicine（TCM） and has introduced a series of strategic decisions to promote TCM.
As a communist party member，I had witnessed the pain of numerous patients with neck and shoulder problems, and I wondered how to follow the policy of the Belt and Road and the Chinese Dream. Then I decided to carry forward my ancestral skills to help relieve their pain and try to make slight efforts to promote the development of TCM.
Host:
Wow, that’s awesome！I can truly feel your deep love for the patients and our country. One more question I want to ask, how do your family think of what you did？
Dean Si：
They didn’t approve of what I did at first because skills can only be passed on to blood relationship and male only according to our family rules. After repeatedly seeking the opinions of my family, they finally accepted my strong request and agreed to carry forward our Chinese bone-setting skills in order to help more people.
Host:
That is so nice. I can feel the coming of the spring of traditional Chinese medicine，not only thanks to the national policy but also thanks to people like Dean Si who did their own efforts to help the development of TCM.
Dean Si, I’ve got another question, on account of the benefits of Chinese bone-setting，people may ask where can we learn this and what’s the relationship between this and Dr. Zhang?
Dean Si:
It is a coincidence.
It was at the Red friends(红友会)club held in Henan province.
Dr.Zhang invited me to the big party to give a speech about practical technique of TCM. This is how we meet at first sight. Well, we both wished that we should know each other the earlier the better.
I do remember that there were more than 500 people in the conference hall. He was shocked by the TCM skills and my plan I showed them.
After that, Dr.Zhang strongly recommend me to cooperate with him, to spread the skills the public.
You wanna know what I think? I think Dr. Zhang’s medical examination training center is one of best in the whole nationwide, it has connects to every corner of China, so I said yes, of course I should take the chance, cooperating with Dr. Zhang to spread Si’s bonesetting, and to help spread TCM to the whole world.

It is really great.
This is a collsion between Dean Si and our Dr. Zhang, this is a collsion between TCM skill and medical training, this is also a collison between peace and love. I have a wish that all the clinician who have the same ambition would join us to carry forward TCM.

I heard Si’s Bonesetting has a very obvious curative effect on treating Lumbar disc herniation
Could you introduce this to us briefly please?
Dean Si:
It is my pleasure. We surely have a very obvious curative effect on the treatment of lumbar disc herniation.
We have a specialized device to treat lumbar disc protrusion, and we have already applied for the patent of the device according to our technical characteristics. The device consists of professional treating bed, treating chair and some other specialized equipment.
And of course, we apply Si's bone-setting plaster to the paitients at the same time.
